The following dogs have found loving homes through the Montana GSP Rescue Program:
|
Remington
Remington is a 2 year-old German Shorthaired or Wirehaired Pointer. He entered rescue in March 2007. Remington was an owner turn-in as the owner did not have time for him.
Remi has been a kennel dog all his life and is starved for attention. He is just a big lover boy with very sweet disposition. He is good with kids and other medium sized female dogs. At this point we don't know what he thinks of cats and small dogs. Remi has very strong pointing instict and really good nose for birds (the first day at his foster home he found quail and pointed them) but is not a trained hunting dog yet. His foster parents are working with him on recall and general manners.
UPDATE 04/03/07 - Remi is doing wonderfully on recall. He loves to retrieve and he quarters naturally. He has been neutered and is current on all shots. He is crate trained and is doing really well on house training.
UPDATE 04/16/07 - Remi found a wonderful new forever home! He will be joining a family of 7 next weekend where he will be a companion dog.

Adopted 2/11/06
Here's what Axle's new family has to say,
"I recently adopted a
German shorthair named Axle from the Montana GSP rescue.
From the very first moment I had him he has been nothing short of a great
dog. He is everything that Nancy made him out to be. In the last week, he's
been enjoying his new home and friends, going on runs and skate skiing
with his new mom, helping to feed my horses, and trying to get the barn cat to
play with him! He seems genuinely happy and at home...especially when he's
hogging bed space and sneaking under the covers!
Thank you so much to the Montana GSP rescue and to Nancy Lane for giving me the
opportunity to share life, love, and lots of fun with Axle."
"Axle" was a 4-year-old, solid liver, neutered male, German Shorthaired Pointer. He was excellent in the house, good with cats, other dogs and kids. He came when called and knew basic obedience. Axle was noise sensitive, so he was best suited to becoming a family pet. This poor dog was turned into a high-kill shelter by his owner's father after his owner left for college. "Alex"
Adopted 5/05
Alex was a 2-year-old neutered male Weimaraner. Here's what Alex's new family has to say:
"We wanted to send you an update on Alex since we've had him for the last 6 months. He is a wonderful dog and fits into our family well. Him and Levi get along great. When I take them out for runs and because Levi is so much older and slower, Alex will run ahead, but always comes back to check up on Levi. Since Levi has always eaten whenever throughout the day, we let Alex do the same. But apparently Alex doesn't know when to stop and when the vet told me that he was becoming overweight, I had to change both of their eating habits in order to monitor that they were both eating what they needed. They now eat 2 small meals a day.
Alex is a cuddler who wants to be laying on top of you all of the time. Sometimes he looks so uncomfortable and I can't believe that he can lay in some positions. I really don't think that he is that comfortable, he's just happy that he is cuddling with you!! He wants to be wherever you are, even if that means following your exact footsteps...REALLY CLOSE. I'm not sure if his other owners left him home alone a lot...but it seems as though he is always scared that you are going to leave him. That is why I think he enjoys Levi so much during the days.
Alex quite enjoys the days when we forget to take out the garbage. He likes to drag everything out all across the house. I know that it is him who starts it, but Levi is very quick to follow. When we open the door, his ears are already back and for some reason he isn't excited as he normally is when we come home. ( I'm sure in his mind he's thinking and asking us "why would you leave me home all day with that temptation??)
We are so happy with Alex and have totally fallen in love with him. We are so glad to have crossed paths with you."

We are taking her and my girlfriend. She will have a BLAST !! It's beautiful there and she can swim with us. And yes, she liked the water when we got the opportunity to play on vacation in the west. Thank you again soooooooooooooooooooo much for taking care of her until we came to rescue her. I really think that she has been waiting for us for the past two years. She is current on shots and in good health, although she still needs to gain some weight. "Kristi" had a little separation problem but got better. She was crate trained, not a good candidate for a family with cats. She got along with other dogs and loved popcorn. It sounds like she was started hunting at one point but may be gun shy.
"Rocket"

Entered rescue 3/20/05, owner turn in
A
dopted 4/23/05"Rocket" was a 2-year-old spayed female. She was housebroken, very good in the house and crate trained. She could jump a 6 ft fence. "Rocket" really liked people and loves to sit in your lap and be loved. She had a strong interest in birds and has natural pointing ability.
"So far so good with Rocket. Both Mary and I worked late last night then went to the gun club to walk Rocket. My best hunting buddy was there with his English Pointer and English Setter. I had Rocket on a check cord but decided to let her wear an e-collar too. To make a very long story short, Rocket pointed two Huns, comes most of the time when called without the e-collar and only needs to hear the beep of the e-collar to immediately return to hand. She heels pretty good most of the time and likes to ride in the pickup and Jeep.
I am very fortunate to have adopted Rocket. Rocket is already proving to be a good companion and she will be a good gun dog with some work. She will get better with time. I am scheduling her for a Vet check up this week. I let you know how she is progressing. Many thanks again"
"Daisy"
Adopted 4/23/05
Daisy has been doing great. Our other dog has let her know who is in charge in a lip curl kind of way. Daisy has been barking when cars go by, so I think she must be taking ownership of the house. I found a teddy bear for her and that seems to make her feel comfortable. The only difficulty is that we need to purchase a larger bed because Daisy had no problems believing that she too could sleep on the bed with us. All is great and she is a wonderful dog. She is great with kids too because my niece and nephew who are 6 and 8 played with her all evening Saturday and the biggest difficulty was making sure that Daisy didn't knock them down with excitement. We are so happy and thankful for this opportunity to have her. Thanks!!!
"Zip" aka "Saphire"
Adopted 4/2/05
I would encourage any one considering adopting a rescue/older dog to go ahead and pursue these thoughts. Our first adoptee was one of Nancy?s retired show dogs. Dancer fit into our family immediately and quickly became our couch potato/bed dog. He is a companion who wants nothing more than to just be loved. Last summer, we drove to Nancy?s to look at some of her GSP?s who needed ?rescuing?. We drove home with Boone, an older GSP who needed some TLC and a stable family. We only had him a short time before we had to let him go to the Rainbow Bridge, but in that short time, he gave us more love than we ever expected. He was truly a friend. Well, to keep it short, we missed having a Shorthair around, so we drove to Nancy?s again. We fell in love with a petite girl who had just come from a shelter in SD. She had been a kennel dog all her life, but wow, does she know how to love. Not knowing what to expect from her, we watched her carefully. After two weeks of being out on long line when we went hiking, we let her loose to run. She comes back when called; she immediately responds to whistle commands; and she is beauty watch run and quarter.
So I guess what I am
trying to say is that Nancy has lot of wonderful dogs and an older/rescue dog is
an inspiring investment. Nancy is so good with helping match a dog to your
family. When you visit the kennels, you can meet the dogs and spend time
getting to know them. Give a rescue a try and find the love that they give.

She had way too much interest in cats. She was obedience trained, housebroken and crate trained. She stuck close to you off leash and had good hunting instinct. Molly got along well with other dogs. She rode very well in the car. She was a very sweet, loving and gentle girl who was confused about her change in circumstances.
"Tootsie"
Entered rescue 12/24/04.
Owner turn in.
Adopted 1/19/05
"Tootsie" was a purebred 9 -12 month old Weimeraner who recently had a litter of
puppies. She was spayed and brought current on her shots through rescue.
Tootsie knew her name, stuck close and came when called. She did not challenge
baby gates in the house, was good with kids, cats and other dogs. She was
housebroken and crate trained. She rode well in a car and learned new routines
and commands quickly.

has settled right in to her new life in a home with two adults and no other
dogs. She has become the center of attention.

He has become an excellent companion and best buddy.
"Tessa"

Taken in 10/25/04, owner turn in
Adopted 11/04
Female, 8 years old, spayed, current on shots, housebroken. Tessa was a girl who was just looking for a quiet home where she could finally just be a dog and a loved companion. She'd had a rough life being used only as a "breeder". She was originally rescued by a loving family but proved to be a bit unpredictable with the young children. Tessa was a very loving dog who just wants nothing but love, attention and a soft couch to lay on. She loved playing fetch and also to run, run, run! Tessa may not be a hunting prospect as she was gun shy and very scared of thunder. This sweetie was still a bit underweight from her ordeal with her past life but had been given a clean bill of health by a local veterinarian.
"Max"

Taken into rescue 8/04
Adopted 10/04
Max is a neutered male about 4 years old. Max was a stray from Wyoming whose time ran out at the shelter.Max is house broken, crate trained and comes when called. He seems to know some basic commands. He seems to be a hunter and will be evaluated as soon as possible."Katie"

Taken into rescue 8/04

"Gabe"
Surrendered 6/27/04
adopted 8/04

He was well cared for and is very active and healthy. Gabe can jump a 4-foot fence and climbs out of chain link. He is a bit timid. His owners began basic, formal obedience with him and he walks pretty well on a leash. Gabe is very birdy, is not gun shy and learns easily. Gabe comes when called. He loves to snuggle and sleep in the bed. He travels well. Gabe will make an excellent hunting, hiking and TV watching buddy.
Gabe is very dark. He has a solid liver head and several patches over dark ticking. He is a beautiful dog.
"Boone"

Surrendered 5/23/04 OWNER TURN IN
Adopted
8-year-old neutered male, current on shots.
Boone was adopted out of the Billings shelter five years ago. His family now has
two small children and a change in housing so he needs a new home. He is birdy
but has not been hunted. Boone loves to camp and hike. He would make a wonderful
addition to an active family.
He retrieves and loves to play ball. Boone is housebroken, obedience trained and
walks on a slack leash attached to a baby stroller. He is excellent with
children. Boone gets along well with other dogs and comes when called. He is
crate trained, respects the child gates in the house and does not test fences.
He loves to sleep in the bed. He has not been cat tested.
Boone is afraid of thunder and lightening but that does not mean he is gun shy.
He will be evaluated for hunting instinct and gun shyness.
Here is what Boone's new parents have to say:
"Boone has settled in very well. He seems to be less stiff and surely likes the puffy dog beds. He has such a funny look on his face when you invite him to sleep on the couch or curl up on the bed. He knows when it is feeding time and food is the highlight of his day.
I have fallen so hard for Boone. I am beginning to think that my lot in life is to foster older dogs. I would certainly be willing to take some rescues/adults needing placements for a few weeks to give them another start in life. We enjoy Boone so much. He is such a sweet companion. We intend to keep Boone no matter what right up to his journey to the bridge. Boone is the kind of dog that is hard not to love. I wrote a poem about Boone."
BOONE
There's a
look in his eyes as he stares at you wondering what he's done wrong;
Why did his people let him go after they loved him so long?
He's no longer young and he can't understand; there's an ache he just can't
hide.
He's trying hard to make a new go, but you sense the pain inside.
Slowly he rises with aching hips and comes to your side for love.
He leans in so gently and you comfort him . . .a touch from God above.
Things here are new; not as they were . . . the bed is a place he can lay.
He knows these things are part of him now; he has found his place to stay.
There's a look in his eyes as he watches a bird; did he ever fetch to hand?
Did he know the roar of a shot gun's blast and his master's 'get-it
'command?
He entered our lives in the fall of his years; the gray slowly gilding his
face.
He brings us love and companionship as he regally takes his place.
We will share our love with this Short Haired guy as time slowly winds to an
end.
How many years are left for us to belong to this wonderful, wonderful
friend?
He came to us to live out his time in repose and comfort sublime.
But I will ask myself over again ? how much; how much is that time?
It's hard not know that some day he'll go to a place called the Rainbow
Bridge.
But how long will that be and when will I place his last picture upon my
fridge?
So much will he teach about how to grow old and how to love to the end.
He came to our lives for a warm place to stay and quickly became a dear
friend.
Each day that he's with us the bed is becoming the place we view as his
throne.
How much will he teach us; how much will he give, we already ask on the sly?
Even the others have since learned to be the younger friends of this guy.
Dancer and Elton view Boone with respect. They certainly give him his
space.
And in quiet moments, Elton approaches, and gently licks on Boone's face.
If life is a puzzle, of this I am sure, these pieces now comfortably fit.
Boone brought us something that surely was missing; old age was definitely
it.
Boone gives us wisdom of how to grow old; of how to be a best friend.
Long may he stay; sharing his teaching until the time for his end.
May my thoughts always be to comfort this friend; to let him know that we
care;
And never to worry that the rug may be scuffed and covered all over with
hair.
Written by Boone's adoptive mom, Karen
8/12/04 "
Hello. I just got back from taking the "boys" for a ride. They all had a good time. Boone is fitting in very well. He gets along with the others. Dancer has even shared food bowls with him. The dog food that I am feeding them has glucosamine in it so it should help Boone's joint. He is a little stiff at times. I am going to get a coat for Boone to wear when he goes outside in the winter. This morning he came and woke me up to tell me he wanted to go outside. He is so gentle and loving and is trying so hard to fit in. Thank you for letting us share his last years with him. He will be well treated and loved very much."8/9/04 "
He's a keeper! He travels well and sure ate his dinner when we got home. He prefers the dog bed on the floor to the bed. He has learned to use the dog door and just lets himself out and in. He likes to sleep on the deck in the sun.""Beau"

Entered Rescue 12/16/2003
Adopted 5/8/04
Male neutered, 5 years old
OWNER TURN IN: Beau was a beautiful purebred German Shorthair Pointer. He had
been left in the 20+ degree below zero weather on a chain in the back yard. His
owners turned him into the shelter because he was barking too much. Beau did not
do very well in the shelter. He was attacked by another dog and had begun to go
"kennel crazy". When we first met this dog, the light had gone out in his eyes
but we knew he had a great potential and needed a great deal of love and
attention.
Beau was good with cats, housebroken and crate trained. He came when called and ranged close. He had been hunted and was not gun shy. He loved toys and retrieving balls. He was adopted into a loving, active family where he is the only dog. His new family has enrolled him into the club's pointing dog clinic. Beau is thriving and sleeping in the bed every night.
Beau turned into quite a hunter. Mark and Beau have become active club members.

Female spayed, 3 years old
Pope was housebroken, good with cats (she lived peacefully with 2), good
with children and other dogs. She was formally obedience trained, hunts, not gun
shy and retrieved to hand. Pope was primarily an indoor dog whose family felt
she needed more attention than they could give her. She found a loving home with

each other out.
"Klause von Lumpie"
Adopted 2/04
Klause von Lumpie is an older, neutered male who was found running on a golf course in Helena. No one claimed him and due to his advanced age and possible medical issues he was taken immediately into rescue and placed into foster care. Klause was emaciated and sickly but began to recover as soon as he was placed on antibiotics and high quality food. Klause is housebroken, good with cats, fully trained, good with other dogs and children. He loves to play ball and retrieves to hand every time. He has found a home where he is the only dog and has full rights to the couch and beds. He is living the good life.
"Shadow"
Adopted 1/04
Shadow was a 6-year-old neutered male whose elderly owner passed away and Shadow was in the home with him for approximately five days until authorities entered the home. Although shaken up, dehydrated and hungry, Shadow was in good health. He was held until authorities could notify the family, but alas, no one would take poor Shadow. Shadow was taken immediately into rescue as he was taken to a 100% kill "shelter". Volunteers drove and fostered him in three legs during part of the worst winter weather to ensure his safety. Shadow was placed with a new family where he is thriving.
"Rosie"

Adopted 12/03
Rosie was found as a stray in the Kalispell area. She had been shot and hit by a car, only she knows which came first. She is an older spayed female who has a great deal of spunk and needed a lot of love. She found it with a wonderful woman in Helena who will give her the perfect home where she can live out the rest of her days as a spoiled and beloved companion.
"Fritz von Neuter"
Adopted 11/03
Fritz von Neuter was a stray whose time ran out at the Missoula shelter. He was an adult, intact male, that was very small. Fritz was placed into rescue and then into foster care where his foster family fell madly in love with him. He's now the smallest member of their shorthair family and is living the good life.
Special thanks to the Missoula Animal Shelter that provided a $60 neuter certificate for his placement.
May 2004: "We took Fritz for a visit to a field trial this weekend. He showed a great deal of interest in the game birds and didn't seem to be bothered by the guns in the distance. He was well behaved on the stake out and greeted all the other dogs and their owners. We're going to start some training with him this summer, slowly and at his own pace. He's just an all-around great dog. We adore him!"
January 2004: "Fritz is a delightful, well mannered, gentle soul. It is impossible to imagine that he was dumped to fend for himself. He is cute, playful and full of personality. He's showing great hunting potential, if we can get him out of bed (our bed) that early in the morning! Sorry Fritz, they don't make beds any larger than king size!"
"We've fostered many rescue dogs over the years and while it breaks our hearts to see them go, we know that they go to wonderful families. This guy came into our home and stole our hearts as well as our other dogs' and even our cat's hearts. We knew he had found his new home, with us!"
"Emmy"

Entered rescue 06/03, owner turn in
AdoptedEmmy is living in WY, gets to sleep on the bed and has lots of canine and human friends. She is such a good dog the family was enticed to adopt another GSP from a local WY shelter.
Emmy is approximately 2 1/2 years old, spayed and current on her shots. She is kid friendly, gets along well with other dogs, is house broken and very loving. She bonds quickly and learned house "rules" quickly while in foster care in Helena. She is not a runner or barker. She stayed behind child gates while in the house and did not challenge fences. She is very close being reliably house broken. She loves to retrieve and displayed great hunting instinct. She is not overly active and settles right down in both the yard and house. She is also crate trained. Emmy will make a great addition to a family that is looking for a house/hunting dog. Emmy is NOT good with cats.
"Elwood"

Adopted
His new family says, "He is
starting to obey commands and loves all the attention he gets. He is a turbo
charged dynamo in the fields!"
Elwood was a five-year-old male. He was an owner turn in directly to the GSP Rescue Program. He is a well-trained hunting dog. His owner relinquished his AKC papers. He ranges close and would make an excellent NSTRA dog and would easily compete in the Senior Level AKC hunt tests and in AKC field trials.
He is eager to please and comes when called. He is good with children and house broken. He is a medium-sized dog with a lot of muscle. He misses his family and is eager to bond with a new family where he can be a family dog and work as a hunting dog as well. He got his wish!
"Greta"

Adopted
Greta went out on a test run with a family from Spokane. She went with a female rescue Weimaraner of the same age. The two of them were having a bit too much fun romping through the house and gardens. They consulted Nancy Lane and with her support and guidance everything is under control.
"They have been better since we
implemented the suggestions you
gave Ed. It's still a lot of work having them both but we cannot bear to choose
between the two of them soooooooooo....we will keep them both! They have a good
and loving home here and I can't see the point in separating them now."
"Greta" was a stray found in
the Helena area near Rimini Rd/Telegraph Rd in May 2003.
She was released to German Shorthair Pointer rescue in July 2003 and was
fostered in Helena. She has gained weight since this photo was taken and is an
age appropriate, active and healthy dog. We believe she is 1 - 1.5 years old.
Greta is white with a few liver freckles and one large patch in the middle of
her right side. Her tail is liver with a white underside. She is spayed and
current on her shots. She is housebroken, good with cats and other dogs. She is
crate trained, does not dig or challenge fences or the child gates in the house.
She is very quiet. Greta is tall for a female and weighs about 60 lbs. She has
had some hunting training and retrieves to hand. She does not appear to be gun
shy. She loves her toys and to play ball. She is very affectionate. Greta is a
wonderful family and hunting companion.
"Jessie"
Adopted
Jessie's owner did not claimed her and she was available for adoption. She was a stray found in the Lincoln, Montana area and taken into the Lewis and Clark County Humane Society Shelter in Helena. She ended up in rescue in May 2003 because she does NOT get along well with cats. She is currently in foster care in Glendive. Jessie is approximately 6 years old, spayed and current on her shots. She is a quiet dog. Jessie was wearing a collar with a rabies tag and we were able to track down her owner who told us she got away from him during a rest stop. He said Jessie took off after a deer and he was unable to wait for her to return. He described her as "an avid hunter and runs big."
"Sadie"

Adopted
Sadie was relinquished by her owners on 5-15-03 to a high-kill Wyoming shelter. The shelter immediately relinquished her to rescue. She was adopted by her foster family in Bozeman, Montana. Sadie was approximately 9 months old, spayed, current on her shots, good with children and cats.
"Harlee"

Adopted
"Harlee" is a very nice male German Shorthaired Hair Pointer who was transferred from a high kill shelter in Wyoming to the Montana GSP rescue program. He is liver and white, approximately 4 years old. He is neutered and current on his shots. Harlee found a loving home and is enjoying the good life in Wyoming. His new owners are so impressed with how well trained he is. They can't believe anyone would give up a dog like him.
"Rocky"
"Rocky" was found by a hiker on a steep and treacherous hiking trail outside of Kalispell July 11, 2003. He was very near death from starvation and dehydration. The hiker was able to get him back to the car, took him home and contacted Montana GSP rescue. He was seen by a veterinarian and responded well to treatment.
His guardian angel and rescuer could not bear to part with him. He's found a forever home with her. Please continue to check back for updates on his recovery.
"Hunter"

"Hunter" was adopted by his new family July 12, 2003. His new family adores him and he has settled right in.
"Just thought since I had a minute I would e-mail you to let you know an update on Hunter. Hunter has been great since the moment we got him. His favorite thing to do is cuddle, he is a big lap dog (or so he thinks). He has adopted the spot right in between Eric and myself in bed. Cyanne and Hunter get along very well, in fact, they are inseparable now. They love to chase and lick each other. We would like to thank you again for giving us the chance to give Hunter a home. We love him very much and couldn't imagine not having him."
"Eric and I would like to thank you again
for giving us a chance to give Hunter a home. I am e-mailing you just to let
you know how he is doing. Hunter has taken his first trip to grandma &
grandpa's house he had a great time exploring a new place and getting tons of
attention. Hunter has found his favorite spot on the couch and also on the
bed. He seems to be doing really well. Cyanne and Hunter get along great.
They play wrestle and chase each other all the time. Eric and I are really
enjoying him and have become very attached.
Thanks again"
Michelle and Eric
"Chip"

Chip is a solid liver approx. 7-year-old neutered male. He can be dog aggressive with some dogs but not all. He is good with children, house broken, crate trained. Chip is a very good hunter but just needs some training.
Chip found a home with a family in North Dakota. Here is what they had to say:
May 2004: I thought I would give you an update on Chip since he has been with us for almost a year now...seems like he has been a part of the family forever. He is doing very well and seems very happy. He even won my wife over in short order. He has not gotten over that urge to run if he gets loose, but as soon as he sees one of us in the car he will follow and after a couple of miles will come right to us. We try not to let him out of our grasp though. He also maintains that aggression toward other dogs, but we haven't had an incident since last summer.
We take him on long runs regularly and as often as possible, I bring him out to a wildlife management area. I always keep him on a 50 foot lead when we are there though. I would like to take him hunting, but am afraid he would bolt and get lost. Our 13 year old would never forgive me for that.
On the whole, we could not have asked for a better dog. Even though he begs for attention constantly. He has his head on my lap as I am typing right now! He is great with everyone and has limitless patience with little kids, something I wish I had sometimes. At any rate, we made the right decision in adopting him.
"Just thought I'd give you an update on Chip. He is definitely a hit. The kids love him (he sleeps with our twelve year old every night) and even my wife, the skeptic, loves him.
I also would like to thank you for your honesty regarding the dog. You were right on with everything and there have been no surprises...no five mile runs into the country either! He has shown a lot of signs of being "birdie", but it would be nice to get him in with a pro before next fall."
"Emmet"
Emmett lives in Bozeman and is another well trained dog given up by his original owners. He now lives in a very active hiking and hunting home where he is blossoming. His original home did not allow him in the house.
"Dutchess"

Dutchess now lives in Bozeman. She is an excellent house dog. She's a brush busting fool as far as bird hunting goes and is not gun shy.
"Kiss"
Kiss now lives in North Dakota and has turned into a great hunting dog. Here is what her forever family has to say about her:
"Kiss is the original snow dog. It doesn't matter if it's below zero, she wants to play ball outside. Too cold for me! She's so funny...she'll bring the ball and sit shivering waiting for me to throw it!"
